Ichari Shahar (Inner City)

Framed by walls of a double fortress, Ichari Shahar is a unique and peculiar museum in the open air. It is a rare Middle Ages town that is preserved entirely in its original form.
Among many historical places in this ancient town is the Maiden's Tower (Kyz-Kalasy). Dating back to the 12th century, originally a place for Zoroastrian worshipers, it offers a magnificent panoramic view of the city and the Caspian Sea.

Shirvan Shah Palace

Built in the 15th century by Shirvan kings, this octagonal shaped building remains one of the most striking monuments of medieval Azerbaijan architecture. Carved stones recovered from ruins of the submerged Sabayil fortress off Baku's shore are displayed in the courtyard of the palace. Their Persian scripts are the genealogy records of the Shirvan kings starting with Fariburz who initiated the construction of the castle.

Other places in Old Town

Darvish Mausoleum - This 15th century Mausoleum is the burial place of Sufi-mystic astronomer and mathematician Seyid Yahya Bakuvi.
Palace Mosque - The 15th century Bei-Kubad Madrassa Mosque stands next to the Shirvan Shahs, Family tomb.
Caravansaraies - Ancient Inns, now converted to craft centers, carpet and antique shops.

Old Residences

In its maze of narrow lanes and dark alleys Ichary Shahar provides ample examples of the medieval Azeri houses. Occasionally one can observe evidences of the diversity of housing styles in Baku in ancient time: charming old multiple-story screened houses, large veranda sun rooms...
